Walking Together for Respect and Unity

Anti-Racism Education

First Nations Incursions is delivering professional learning workshops for teachers and staff in Early Learning Centres and Schools, in collaboration with specialist First Nations educators and local Aboriginal community groups. Workshops will build teacher competence and confidence to address racism across metro and regional Victoria.

This professional learning program supports educators to deepen their understanding and practice in anti-racism education through culturally responsive pedagogy and critical reflection. Participants are guided through respectful, practical and evidence-informed approaches to embedding anti-racism across school environments and curriculum areas.

Grounded in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives and contemporary educational practice, this workshop builds teacher capability to recognise and respond to bias, strengthen inclusive learning environments, and contribute to culturally safe school communities.

The session runs for 2hrs and will include discussion informed by current local issues. We will provide ongoing support via a dedicated online forum and a follow up on-line group session with an experienced mentor.

This program aligns with the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APST), including Standards 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 7, with particular emphasis on:

  • Understanding student diversity and how students learn (Standard 1)

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures and perspectives (Standard 2.4)

  • Inclusive teaching strategies and curriculum design (Standard 3)

  • Creating and maintaining safe, respectful and supportive learning environments (Standard 4)

  • Engagement in professional learning to improve practice (Standard 6)

  • Ethical practice and professional responsibility within school communities (Standard 7)

Specifically:

  • 2.1.2 Content and teaching strategies of the teaching area(s)

  • 1.1.2 Physical social and intellectual development and characteristics of learners

  • 4.4.2 Maintain safety of learners

  • 4.3.2 Manage challenging behaviour

  • 7.1.2 Meet professional ethics and responsibilities

  •
