The Power of Storytelling in Education
A 90-minute interactive professional learning session exploring how storytelling can be shared through art, music and oral traditions. Educators will experience different forms of storytelling in action and discover practical, respectful ways to use them to support children’s learning, imagination, cultural understanding and connection.
The session includes a hands-on boomerang painting activity where participants create a painted boomerang that tells a story meaningful to them, that they can then take home.
Up to 25 participants: $1,750 + GST
Boomerang painting materials included.
Travel charge $100 if venue is more than 25km from Warrandyte.
Session Structure
Welcome and introduction - 10 minutes
Explore the role of storytelling in sharing knowledge, values, identity, culture and connection.
Storytelling through oral traditions - 15 minutes
Experience oral storytelling in action and explore how voice, rhythm, repetition and participation can engage children and support learning.
Storytelling through music and sound - 15 minutes
Discover how music, rhythm and sound can convey emotion, create atmosphere and become part of the storytelling experience.
Storytelling through visual art - 10 minutes
Explore how colour, pattern, imagery and symbols can communicate ideas and meaning, including respectful approaches to sharing First Nations perspectives.
Boomerang story-painting activity - 30 minutes
Participants create a painted boomerang that tells a story meaningful to them. The facilitator will guide participants in developing and representing their own story through colour, pattern and imagery. Each participant can take their boomerang home.
Sharing, reflection and practical application - 10 minutes
Participants may share the meaning behind their artwork and reflect on practical ways to use art, music and oral storytelling within their own educational settings.
